As they grew older their relationship strained. Once Regulus made it to Hogwarts he got sorted into Slytherin and not Gryffindor like his older brother. As Sirius started spending more time with Pete, James, and Remus the brothers grew apart.

This was further amplified once Sirius started to express his hatred towards his family and their beliefs freely. Sirius wanted to be nothing like the rest of his family and Regulus just wanted to uphold his family image and that causes them to stop interacting almost altogether. This took complete effect once Sirius ran away from home and left Regulus with his parents, mostly due to his support towards his family and their ideology.

Although it is abundantly clear that Sirius hated his relatives and felt more at home with the Potters it seems he did not have the same feelings regarding Regulus. When telling Harry about him, he makes it clear he believes his brother was a good person who blindly trusted their parents.

Although Horcruxes are extremely rare and require a lot of knowledge and magical power to actually get created successfully, they existed for a while before Voldemort discovered them. The first recorded Horcrux was created by Herpo the Foul, who was an extraordinary Dark wizard in ancient Greece.

He came up with the idea of creating such a magical object and created it to test his theory out. That being said, he and Voldemort are the only known wizards who used this kind of magic. This notion paired up with his cheeky attitude caused by his vision of himself as the most powerful wizard of all time prompted Voldemort to start dropping subtle hints to everyone.

We actually witnessed this in the movies. During the scene where Voldemort gets a new body from Peter, Voldemort called for his Deatheaters and while he talks to them he hints his spirit was alive all the time. Voldemort acted the same way toward his Deatheaters and enemies during his first rise to power. One of those people was Regulus. After talking about it with Regulus, he decided to research it a bit to figure out what it was that Voldemort was using to get his way. Regulus realized that Voldemort was using Horcruxes to make sure his and since he believed that was taking things too far since it involved murder he decided to turn on his master.

Now that he knew what is it that he was looking for Regulus had to find the object Voldemort used to create the Horcrux. Tom Riddle found it in possession of Hepzibah Smith, a wealthy witch with an affinity for collecting rare artifacts. After killing her and repossessing the locket which was his birthright, Tom Riddle used it to create a new Horcrux after killing a Muggle. He hid the Horcrux in the Crystal cave in England.

One day, Voldemort asked Regulus for the use of his house-elf, Kreacher and Regulus eagerly accepted as he wanted to please his master. Voldemort used Kreacher to test the defences around his locket Horcrux , leaving him to die afterwards. Kreacher was able to escape using house-elf magic, and told Regulus of what had happened.

Regulus worked out that the locket was a Horcrux and was the reason behind Voldemort's immortality. This was the deciding factor in Regulus' defection. He created a duplicate of the locket and placed a note inside for Voldemort to find, expecting him to check on the horcrux in the future, and then ordered Kreacher to take him to where the real locket was hidden. Kreacher guided Regulus past the cave's defences. At the island with the basin of potion containing the locket, Regulus ordered Kreacher to take the locket once the potion was gone and replace it with the fake one , then escape without him and find a way to destroy the Horcrux.

Regulus drank the potion himself, and when he tried to get water from the lake to quench his thirst, he was dragged to his death by the Inferi. Kreacher obeyed his master's final order and switched the lockets before escaping. However, despite his best efforts, he was unable to destroy the Horcrux. The true circumstances of Regulus's death were entirely unknown to the members of his family, as he had asked Kreacher to keep the events at the cave a secret, due to this being safer for the family. Kreacher later earned this respect by subsequently showing more respect towards Harry, Ron and Hermione. The real locket was later destroyed by Ron Weasley with Gryffindor's Sword, finally accomplishing what Regulus had set out to do.

During the Battle of Hogwarts , Kreacher, having rallied many of the school's house-elves to assist him, ordered them to fight for Regulus while wielding knives against the Death Eaters' knees and shins.

Because of that, he would have had to protect his mind from inspection as his disillusionment grew. In the end, his sacrifice was apparently futile, as Kreacher was never able to destroy the locket he carried away, and as Voldemort had, at that time, possibly as many as four additional Horcruxes hidden away.

The Horcrux within the locket is, of course, eventually found and destroyed. Kreacher might have been able to destroy it if Regulus had told him what it was, but Kreacher apparently was not told that it was a Horcrux he was trying to destroy, though Regulus' note indicates that he knew what it was.
